Overcoming Destination Misconception

Eli Gorin, CMP, CMM
What if you were having a discussion with colleagues about different destinations and suddenly someone brings up Bogota, Colombia?  How about Miami?  Or let’s say Madison?  Each of those locations would register in your mind differently than it would in the minds of your colleagues.  Why?  Because of one simple thing that we are all guilty of doing: developing perceptions.  Now, perceptions are not a bad thing.  They are derived from your mind’s interpretation of information gathered and, based on many factors, has drawn a conclusion about.  However, and no matter how much anyone tries to argue this… perception is not reality.

Perceptions have a tremendous impact on decision-making, which in turn has a major impact in the advancement of businesses and industries.  So many times you will hear people say “perception is reality”.  For that to be true, then we need to change that sentence to “perception is one’s own reality”.

Networking Event

MPI networking competition: See who has the best networking skills. To celebrate the Winter Olympics taking place while we are meeting, each person will be assigned a winter sport. At check-in each guest will receive their passport with a sheet of stickers that feature their sporting symbol on them along with a symbol on their nametag designating which sport they “play”. At the start of the networking portion a sheet of questions relating to the meeting planning industry will be given out to each participant. The goal is to ask each sport 2 questions from the sheet. Once that sport has answered your questions they put one of their stickers in your passport and you can move onto the next sport. The goal is to be the first one to fill up your passport.  BONUS – Make sure you meet with a variety of people as some may count as double points. And yes, there will be prizes!
